Toma

The Toma ethnicity, also known as Thom or Tonga, is a community that mainly lives in Guinea, but also in Mali and Senegal. They are estimated to be around 120,000 people.

The Toma are mainly farmers and livestock herders, and their culture is heavily influenced by their natural environment, which is mainly composed of mountains and hills. They have a rich musical and craft tradition, producing musical instruments such as the balafon and kora, as well as textiles and pottery.

Traditional religion is very important to the Toma, with beliefs in nature spirits and ancestors. However, they have also been strongly influenced by Islam and Christianity, and many Toma now practice one of these religions.

The main language of the Toma is Tomara, a Mandé language that belongs to the Manding branch of languages.
