Bete

The Bété ethnic group is a West African ethnic group, mainly concentrated in Côte d'Ivoire. The Bété speak Bété, a Kru language that is part of the Niger-Congo language family.

The Bété are primarily farmers, cultivating crops such as cassava, corn, rice, and peanuts. They are also known for their craftsmanship, particularly the production of cotton fabrics, wicker baskets, and wooden sculptures. Bété sculptures often depict stylized human figures with characteristic features such as an oval head, elongated eyes, and a triangular-shaped mouth.

Bété society is traditionally organized around patrilineal lineages, with family chiefs playing an important role in community decision-making. The Bété practice traditional African religions, with beliefs in spirits and ancestors that influence daily life. Bété religious practices include animal sacrifices, healing rituals, and dance ceremonies.

The Bété have also been involved in political protest movements in Côte d'Ivoire, fighting for land rights and political reforms. Their active participation in Ivorian politics reflects their commitment to preserving their culture and identity as a distinct ethnic group.
