Punu Mask – Gabon
Origin and Cultural Context
This mask originates from the Punu ethnic group in southern Gabon. The Punu are renowned for their female-faced masks representing ancestral spirits. These masks were used during funeral rituals and rites of passage to escort the deceased to the spiritual world.
Mask Features
Carved from wood and coated with white kaolin, this mask displays a serene face with fine scarification patterns on the forehead and temples. The half-closed eyes, full lips, and sculpted high chignon reflect the Punu standards of beauty and ancestral wisdom.
Cultural Significance
Punu masks are deeply tied to ancestor worship and the concept of spiritual purity. The white coloration symbolizes the spirit world. When worn in acrobatic dances, the mask invoked the guiding and protective presence of departed women among the living.
